WHAT IS RADON?
An Invisible Gas That Can Build Up Inside Your Home
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced when uranium in soil and rock breaks down. Because radon is a gas, it can move through soil and enter buildings through cracks and openings in foundations.
Radon can enter through:
- Cracks in foundation walls and floors
- Floor drains
- Sump pits
- Gaps around pipes and utility penetrations
- Construction joints
- Crawl spaces
- Other openings between your home and the surrounding soil
Once inside, radon can accumulate — particularly in lower levels of a home.
You cannot determine your home’s radon level without testing.
Health Canada recommends testing homes for radon, with a long-term test of at least 91 days providing a more representative measurement of a home’s average annual radon level.
The cancer-causing gas hiding in millions of homes
January 26
Radon gas is invisible, toxic and millions of Canadians have no idea it’s hiding in their homes. For The National, CBC’s Lauren Pelley breaks down the health risks and what you can do to keep your home safe.
WHY TEST FOR RADON?
Your Home Could Have Elevated Radon Levels Without You Knowing
Radon levels can vary significantly from one home to another — even between neighbouring homes.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reports that approximately 11% of homes in Windsor-Essex County have radon levels above Canada’s action level of 200 Bq/m³.
There is no way to determine whether your home has elevated radon simply by looking at the property or knowing its age.
The only way to know your radon level is to test.
Testing is especially important if:
- You have a basement or lower level
- Your family spends significant time in the basement
- You are purchasing a home
- You are renovating your basement
- You are finishing an unfinished basement
- Your home has never been tested
- You have previously received elevated radon results
- You are planning major renovations that could change how your homebreathes

RADON FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is radon?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It is invisible, odourless and tasteless and can enter buildings through openings in foundations.
Can I smell or see radon?
No. Radon cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. Testing is the only way to determine the level in your home.
What is the Canadian radon guideline?
Health Canada’s current radon guideline is 200 Bq/m³. Corrective action is recommended when the long-term average radon level in a normal occupancy area exceeds this level.
Is there a safe level of radon?
There is no level of radon exposure considered completely risk-free. Health Canada recommends taking corrective action above 200 Bq/m³ and reducing levels as much as reasonably achievable.
How long should I test my home?
Health Canada recommends a long-term test of at least 91 days to provide a more representative estimate of the home’s average annual radon level. Testing during the fall and winter heating season is preferred.
What happens if my radon level is high?
If your long-term test shows a radon level above 200 Bq/m³, corrective action should be considered. A qualified radon mitigation professional can assess your home and recommend an appropriate mitigation system.
How does radon mitigation work?
A common approach is Active Soil Depressurization. A fan and pipe system draws radon-containing soil gas from beneath the home and exhausts it outside before it can accumulate indoors.
Is radon mitigation disruptive?
Most residential mitigation installations can be completed with relatively limited disruption. The exact installation depends on the home’s foundation, basement layout and the mitigation system required.
Do I need to test if my neighbours have low radon?
Yes. Radon levels can vary considerably between homes. A neighbouring home’s results cannot tell you what your home’s radon level is.
Should I test after renovating my basement?
Yes. Renovations can alter the way air moves through a home. Testing before and/or after major renovations can help you understand your home’s radon exposure.
