1.      Figure out your needs vs wants.

What things do you need to do in your bathroom remodel? What are somethings that would be nice to have? Set your priorities at the beginning.

2.      Do Research.

How much will things cost? Make sure you have a strong understanding of what the cost of tile, fixtures, etc. are so you can set a realistic budget.

3.      Set a ballpark budget.

The real cost will also include labor and any surprises behind the walls. But you want to have a rough idea of what the cost is before you meet with a contractor.

4.      Get estimates.

Not just one. Get multiple (more than three!) estimates before you start working with any contractors. This will help you establish how much the job will cost.

5.      Ask for referrals.

If you want a reputable contractor, you need to do your due diligence. This means reading reviews, asking for referrals and speaking with your top choice contractors in person!

6.      Prepare to lose your bathroom.

What are your options for taking a shower or using the bathroom while its going under remodel? You need a plan; it’ll be out of commission for a few weeks!

7.      Don’t move the plumbing!

Want to keep your costs down? Don’t move the plumbing! Switching your sing and toilet around might look easy, but there are tons of costs involved in moving the plumbing!

8.      Don’t underestimate the importance of lighting in a bathroom!

Dim lighting is nice for a relaxing bath; bright lights are great for shaving or applying makeup. By adding more overall lighting, you can make a small bathroom seem larger!

9.      Ventilation!

Moisture is your bathroom’s greatest enemy! Mold and mildew don’t take long to ruin your newly finished bathroom. Install a vent fan with the appropriate CFMs for the square footage of your bathroom. It should be one CFM per square foot of the bathroom.

10.  Stay involved.

Communicate with your contractor on a daily basis. It’s a great way to avoid surprises. It’s your home; your money. Be a part of the process.

  • No bad air to breathe in (dust, toxic gases, etc.)
  • If it’s an older home, you don’t have to worry about coming into contact with asbestos
  • One big house move instead of recurrent smaller moves (moving things from one room to another).
  • Costs can and likely will go up over time, so the more you do at once, the less expensive it will be.
  • You won’t have to live in renovation messes for potentially years.


  • You’re less likely to be able to do as many of the renovations yourself (because the longer it takes, the longer you’re living elsewhere – racking up more costs).
  • More expensive – costs add up (ie. contractors, electricians, interior design specialist, etc.)
  • You have to pay for a place to stay – or have to live with family.
  • You spend all your money at once – leaving less money around for unpredictable emergencies.

Some final thoughts and considerations…

  1. Can your projects be contained to one room at a time? Are you disciplined to stick to and complete one room at a time?
  2. Think about your family’s stress level, mental health and overall safety during these renovations.
  3. Be realistic about the time, energy and money it will take for you to complete these renovations.

There isn’t a right or wrong answer… It all comes down to your personal preference and what’s best for you and the people you live with.

Here are five of the biggest mistakes people make:

1.      Not planning ahead.

This is one of the biggest mistakes. When you’re not sure what you truly want for your home, or you want to many things all at once, you could end up wasting a lot of time, money and resources on a renovation project.

Before you begin, you need to determine how much your renovations will cost and then add an additional 10% for unexpected problems and potential upgrades. (Some say this percentage should be higher)! 5.       Getting to “Flashy.”

If you think you might be selling your house in the foreseeable future, you might want to rethink the purple walls that seem like a great idea right now. You want to think about what a potential buyer might think about the renovations. Those changes might be really cool to you, but the buyer might not agree and it could end up hurting you and costing more money in the future.
