If you’ve had your home for ten years or more, you’re likely to need these nine updates.
A New Carpet
The average carpet has a life expectancy of approximately ten years. This varies depending on several factors including location (is it in a high traffic area), number of people and pets.
If you’re noticing that your carpet has rips, tears, stains or odor that remains after a good cleaning, or if you carpet just looks old and worn out, it’s time to get an upgrade.
Replace Your Hot Water Tank
A water heater may not show symptoms before it begins to leak or fail – so it’s important to know its age. If it doesn’t have a manufacture date, it may be embedded in the serial number on the tank.
Water heaters should be replaced every ten years as a general rule.
Update Your Ceiling Fan
Your typical midrange ceiling fan should last about ten years if it’s run frequently. When it seems, the lightbulbs seem to burn out more quickly than usual, it’s a sign that it needs to be replaced.
Ceiling fans are about style as well as function and after ten years, you may want a more modern model anyways.
A New Dishwasher
Just like your water heater, it’s not a bad idea to consider replacing your dishwasher if it’s ten years old. You’re likely able to find a more energy efficient model that will pay for itself over time.
If you dishwasher has an unresponsive control board, poorly cleaned dishes or cracks in the tub, there are some obvious signs to replace your dishwasher sooner.
Trash The Garbage Disposal
The blades in your garbage disposal will dull over time. If you notice it’s not working like it used to, then it’s time to get it replaced.
The average garbage disposal lasts about ten to twelve years if used regularly.
Replace Your Washer And Dryer
The average lifespan of an appliance is about eight years. So, if your set is 10 years or older and is still running without issues, then consider yourself blessed. That being said, start looking for good deals before yours causes problems or leaks and you find yourself in need of new ones.
Repaint Inside And Out
There isn’t a rule written in stone on how often you need to repaint… It depends on where you live, humidity and several other factors.
People often repaint certain areas that are heavily used every three to five years. But if there are areas of your home that haven’t been repainted in ten years, now is the time to do it.
Re-caulk Showers, Bathrooms And Sinks
Whether you noticed the caulking is peeling or needs to be replaced, you’ll want to do that sooner rather than later. Re-caulking your tub, shower and sinks is easily done yourself and makes everything look so much brighter.
Re-glaze Your Windows
Re-glazing your old windows is easier and much more cost-effective than replacing them. Typically, re-glazing should be done every ten years or so.
Check your windows every year before the cold weather arrives to make sure you don’t have any leaks or cracks.
